The present perfect, active and passive, with since and for
The present perfect is have or has plus the past participle: I have changed. The passive adds been: I have been changed by it. Use since with the point a thing started - since 2019 - and for with how long it has lasted - for three years.
Examples
I have known my own strengths since last summer.
She has been encouraged by her family for years.
We have learned a great deal about ourselves this term.
The mistake to avoid
Do not swap since and for. Say 'since Monday' for the starting point and 'for three days' for the length. And the passive needs been: 'has been chosen', not 'has chosen', when the subject did not do the choosing.
Speaking: The qualities and values that make you who you are
Think about it on your own: Which of your own qualities would a close friend name first, and would you name the same one? Then ask a partner: - What quality of yours are you most glad about? - Where do you think your values came from? - Is it possible to change your character on purpose?
