Big Numbers

👀 Let's look
Reinforcing place value. Numbers keep going past the thousands.
Digits are grouped in threes, called periods.
Periods
Big numbers are written in groups of three digits called periods, separated by commas: 524,361. Each period is read as a small number followed by its name — 524 thousand, 361.
The periods, going leftwards, are ones, thousands, millions. So a number with two commas in it runs into the millions, and you can tell how big it is before reading a single digit.
Each place is ten times the next
Inside every period the three places are ones, tens and hundreds, and each is worth ten times the one to its right. That is true right across the number, however long it gets.
A zero is not nothing — it holds a place open. 506 and 56 are different numbers, and the zero is the whole difference between them.
