Changing Place Values

👀 Let's look
Reinforcing place value. Each place is ten times the one on its right.
Multiplying by 10 shifts every digit one place left.
Ten times, and a tenth
Moving a digit one place to the left makes it worth ten times as much; one place to the right, a tenth as much. That single fact is what the whole place value system is built on.
So the 4 in 40 is worth ten times the 4 in 4, and the 4 in 400 is worth ten times that again. Same digit, different place, different value.
Multiplying by ten
Multiplying by 10 slides every digit one place left, and a zero fills the empty ones place. That is why 37 × 10 = 370 — the zero is not added on, it appears because the digits moved.
Dividing by 10 does the opposite. Reading a number aloud and asking "ten times bigger than what?" is a good way to check you have the places right.
40 ÷ 104
4040
40 × 10400
40 × 1004000
Start with the number itself.
