A bar graph turns numbers into heights.
One glance shows which group is biggest.
Bar graphs
A bar graph shows numbers as bars. The taller the bar, the bigger the number, so you can compare at a glance without reading any of them.
To read one exactly, follow the top of the bar across to the numbers on the side. That side is called the scale.
Look at the scale first
The scale does not always go up in ones. If it goes up in fives, a bar reaching the second mark is 10 and not 2.
Three questions come up again and again: how much is one bar, how many more is one than another, and how many altogether.
