A pattern follows one rule again and again.
Find the rule and you can carry on for ever.
A pattern
A pattern is a chain of numbers made by following one rule over and over. Start at 4 and add 3 each time: 4, 7, 10, 13, 16.
To find the rule, look at what changes from one number to the next. If it is the same jump every time, that jump is the rule.
Check more than one jump
Two numbers can look like a pattern by accident. Check the jump from the second to the third as well before you trust it.
Once you know the rule you can carry on for ever, and you can also go backwards — which is how you find a number that is missing from the front of the chain.
