👀 Let's look
Decimals to the thousandths place. Each place is ten times the one on its right.
So multiplying by 10 slides every digit one place left.
Multiplying and dividing by ten
Each place is worth ten times the one on its right. So multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left, and dividing by 10 moves every digit one place to the right.
Multiplying by 100 moves two places, by 1000 three. Count the zeros in the number you are multiplying by, and that is how many places every digit travels.
The digits move, not the point
It is easier to picture the digits sliding past a point that stays where it is. Either way the answer is the same, but thinking of the digits keeps the place names straight.
Multiplying by ten makes a number bigger and dividing makes it smaller — even when it does not look like it. 0.4 × 10 = 4, and the 4 has not changed; it has moved to a place worth ten times more.

0.4 × 104
0.4 × 10040
Start with the number itself.
